Establishing Behavior Expectations
By: Adam Lane, Principal, Haines City High School
The importance of establishing behavior expectations, teaching and modeling these expectations, and rewarding the students that meet these behavior expectations.
What an honor to spend the morning with the educational
leadership team and various worship staff at Shalom Christian Academy in
Davenport, FL. I commend them all for
coming together and investing time to listen, learn and discuss strategies, for
providing the absolute best learning environment for their students! We focused
on establishing teacher and student expectations, how to teach these
expectations and how to celebrate success when these expectations are met. As
educators, we cannot assume when students arrive on our campus for the first
time, that they know how to behave properly. We must teach, model, and reward
behavior that aligns with the desired expectations.
Why is it that as teachers in Math, Science, English, and
all content areas we teach, re-teach, support, evaluate, re-teach, support, and
re-evaluate but with behavior we punish, punish, punish and punish some more?
We must approach the process of seeking appropriate behavior just as we would
when we seek academic achievement! Gather a committed group of students, staff,
parents, and community members, determine your expectations, design ways to
promote and teach these expectations, and the fun part, incorporate ways to
celebrate students who meet and exceed these expectations.
A definite highlight for me is when I noticed a familiar
face in the crowd. She was a graduate of my high school, decided to pursue a
career as a teacher and she even had our graduation photo readily accessible on
her phone. Hola Yamileyka Rivera – class of 2017. Awesome and so proud of her!
